Shanghai – Day 3

After a karaoke night everybody felt a bit tired. Luckily we had a long morning where some of us ate breakfast and others kept sleeping. To start the day we had a meeting point in Oriental Pearl Tower at 3 PM. We bought tickets to river cruise for the night and tried to go to the Oriental Pearl Tower observation deck, but it had a two hour queue. We decided to not to go since some of us felt bit nausea and tired and the long waiting queue didn’t inspire us. After a brief discussion we decided to walk to the nearby Shanghai Tower. It turned out to be a very good decision as there was no queue and it was a little bit cheaper than the Oriental Pearl Tower.

The Shanghai Tower is the second tallest building in the world as the only taller one is the famous Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The building height is 632 meters and the construction of the building cost 15,7 billion CNY. It has the world highest observation deck in 561 meters and according to Shanghai Tower presentation the world’s fastest super high-speed elevator. The top speed of the elevator is 20,5 m/s and the building is designed for high energy efficiency.

Before entering the elevator, there was an exhibition hall that showcased the history and the future of the tallest buildings in the world. The elevator fit about 20 people at the same time, and the trip up was exciting but a bit unpleasant because the pressure difference hurt our ears.

From the observation deck we saw some awesome views of the whole city of Shanghai. Everything seemed so small even though Shanghai has a lot of tall buildings. Shanghai has also the tenth highest building in the world but it looked like a little baby brother compared to the Shanghai Tower. We could see very distant objects from there and almost thought that we could see the curvature of the earth. Everybody was fascinated by the sights and felt a bit dizzy while looking down from the windows.

After we got down from the tower we went to get some delicious dinner. We took a couple of photos of the glowing lights ad it was already getting dark. To finish the Shanghai signature experience, we took an hour long river cruise along the Huangpu River. From the ship we could see glimmering lights of Shanghai. We had never experienced the same. It felt like we were in the center of the world.
